Telecommunications Services

The telecommunications industry is hugely important both in the UK and globally. However, to ensure fair practice within the industry and to safeguard consumers’ rights from bogus telecommunications companies, it has been necessary for the UK government to introduce a ‘watchdog’ organisation.

Until recently the telecommunications industry watchdog was known as Oftel, however the duties of this organisation are now dealt with through Ofcom (Office for Communications). Ofcom is the regulator for all the UK’s communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, telecommunications and wireless communications services.

The telecommuncaitons watchdog’s duties fall into six main areas, which are ensuring the optimal use of the electro-magnetic spectrum; ensuring a wide range of electronic communications services is available right across the UK; ensuring there is a wide range of television and radio services that are all of high quality and wide appeal; maintaining plurality in the provision of broadcasting; applying adequate protection for audiences against offensive or harmful material; and applying adequate protection for audiences against unfairness or the infringement of privacy.

However, Ofcom is not the only UK organisation working for the interests of the telecommunications industry and its customers. The industry’s main trade association is the Telecommunications Industry Assoication (TIA), or the Communications and Information Technology Assoication (CITA), as it is now known. This trade association provides help and support to businesses within the telecommunications industry, dealing with regulatory policy, competition issues, technical and quality standards and other issues on behalf of its members.

In addition to Ofcom and CITA, there are also a number of gloabal trade assocations and regulatory bodies that work within and for the global telecommunications industry.
